“Last Dance at the Sudden Death Café” is a classic thriller with outrageous, dark-comedy overtones about a paramilitary takeover of the American government by mysterious, behind-the-scenes players who use the dreaded yellow fever virus as a terrorist weapon.

When President Angus McDuff’s ranch foreman dies of a sudden illness, along with the Secret Service agent assigned to protect him, the Dallas hospital that treated him is shaken.
Later, when it is determined that they both were infected by a yellow fever virus while attending a New York Knicks’ game in Madison Square Garden, it becomes apparent that they—and thousands of spectators at the game—are victims of a terrorist attack.
Just when it appears that things couldn’t possibly get any worse, the Louisiana Superdome comes under attack during a Super Bowl game by terrorists armed with the yellow fever virus, infecting tens of thousands of people using the most ingenious weapon of mass destruction ever devised—METHANE FLATULENCE (better known as the human fart).
As the plot unfolds, the terrorists are linked to a leftist government in Venezuela hostile to American oil interests. But is it all a scam? Some believe that the terrorist attack was organized and financed by Americans with a secret agenda.
With Congress’ approval, President McDuff launches a surprise attack against Venezuela, invading the oil-producing nation for the express purpose of deposing the president and setting up a government that is friendly to the U.S.
That would probably be the end of the story, but for the efforts of an enterprising television reporter Candace Ross, who is married to Harry Ross, special counsel to President McDuff. Candace discovers that the truth about the attacks and bravely exposes the conspiracy to the entire world, a decision that targets her for assassination.
The book features strong female characters and complex male characters.
Written by a journalist who is an expert on yellow fever, this novel looks at the ultimate nightmare—a terror-driven disease for which there is only enough vaccine for one city to be protected. Which city would you choose?

What a great book title!

But the Kindle edition is full of bad formatting. Paragraphs broken in the middle. Strings of paragraphs without indentation. Page breaks for no reason. Dialogue that is closed by quotation marks, but not opened by them.

That alone should have induced me to delete Last Dance from my Kindle.

Then I started noticing that all the dialogue sounded alike - flat and emotionless. A woman's husband dies and her conversational tone is so matter-of-fact she might have just been asking if there was mustard on a hot dog. All the characters talk in the same uninflected, indistinguishable way except for Angus McDuff, who seems to have a vaguely affected, unconvincing Texan feel to his speech.

I scanned up to chapter 3, wading through paragraph after paragraph of dull explanatory exposition, indistinguishable characters and plodding action before I gave up. I figure if a thriller hasn't grabbed you in the first couple of pages, let alone the first couple of chapters, it's never going to.

How much of my negative perception is objective? I don't know. It could be that the objectively horrible formatting of the text broke my concentration and, by itself, soured the reading experience, preventing me from enjoying a remarkable story. I guess I'll never know.

This review is from the day after the Kindle release. Perhaps in time the formatting issues will be corrected. Immaterial in my mind. First editions are not supposed to look like garbage. First appearances count for a lot in the typeset world.

Last Dance at the Sudden Death Cafe eBook James L Dickerson Reviews

I know the author's work from the non-fiction world. He's written about the southern music scene, a biography of Nicole Kidman, a work concentration camps, and a couple of dozen others. The three I read were first rate. His foray into the suspense genre doesn't disappoint. This is a smartly paced little book, nicely drawn character and enough suspense to keep you turning the page. This definitely belongs in your cart!
